No Longer Need Landline - Number Porting Query

Hi,

We no longer need landline services from BT, not least because I don't want to have to use the SmartHub in my chain of network equipment but also as there are other good value VOIP options that would be better value for the amount of landline calls we make.

Looking at the help pages, the implication is that if we cease our landline service, the number effectively becomes nullified and can't be used again, even with another provider. Is this correct? I assumed that the number could be ported. The FAQs state the following:

Can I get my current home phone number back after I’ve opted for Broadband only?
No, you can’t retrieve your number once you’ve opted for Broadband only. This will also apply if you switch to a new provider.

Can I move to another provider and get a home phone once I’ve taken Broadband only?
Yes. But you won’t be able to get your old home phone number back. You’ll be given a new number instead.

I may be misunderstanding the above or mi-interpreting the way it is written but essentially I need to know I can port our existing landline number to a new provider when changing our BT service to broadband only.

Thanks

The best way to do it from my understanding is request the new provider to take the service over which would then ideally port the number as well.  Not sure on how VOIP numbers switch though but deffo worth asking the question to your chosen supplier before you put anything in place with BT

Re: No Longer Need Landline - Number Porting Query

If your intention is to remain with BT for broadband only , and want to port your existing phone number to a traditional VoIP supplier, there are a few things to consider…if you simply ask a VoIP provider to port the number ( these things are instigated by the gaining provider not the losing provider ) , your broadband will be ceased as a consequence, you could restart your BT broadband service but obviously this will mean a period without service , you could arrange with BT to become a broadband only customer, but there is a recent post where to achieve this the BT customer had to be moved to EE ( pretty much an identical service so no great hardship ) once you are a stand-alone broadband customer (EE or BT ) the phone number is available to be ported for 30 days …this is entirely your chosen VoIP provider responsibility, if it fails , blame them.
As far as VoIP representing better value for your needs, care to share the company and plan, most VoIP providers I’ve seen charge more per month ( £10+ compared to BT £3 for PAYG )  , although their price per minute for calls is better , if you make a small number of calls the £7 difference isn’t likely to be covered, and if a large number of calls , then BT Unlimited calls plan is £12 , so although the VoIP is cheaper, it’s not by much .
Obviously the SH2 requirement may  be reason enough to move telephony elsewhere, but you do then have the expense of providing your own ATA etc ..

Re: No Longer Need Landline - Number Porting Query

Further to @iniltous  message 3.  Two months back my voip provider of choice, (Voipfone) ported my

stopped service  PSTN line during the 30day  "right to port period". All working OK.

I think the BT. FAQ  answers have to fit in with the tale of the PSTN switch off not costing you extra money or complication. My cost was £80 to buy a Grandstream ATA  with £6 per month, rolling, for 100 minutes plan. Plus the hassle of timing the porting request to one day after the move to broadband only completes.  I want my fixed home phone to be independent  of whatever ISP move I choose in the future.

Re: No Longer Need Landline - Number Porting Query

I have been looking at the Voipfone service which is £6 per month for 100 minutes which we very rarely go anywhere near and yet we are currently paying £12 per month for unlimited calls. We used to pay less than that for a 700 minute (I think) bundle but that's no longer available.

I have tested Voipfone which works perfectly, it means I don't have to use the SH2 and it means the choice of landline (if and while we still need it) is independent of broadband provider.

I was told before that if I move broadband to EE, our mobile package would also have to move to EE which is not great at present as our legacy deal is better for what we need.

I guess the easiest solution would be to see if I can remove the unlimited £12 per month cost, grab a new phone number with Voipfone for £6 per month and then look at changing to broadband only with BT when the contract officially runs out. Most people have our mobile numbers now anyway so the landline is really just a bit of a backup.

Just downgrade the unlimited calls to PAYG, you can do that yourself in MyBT.
