Its caused by bad or corroded copper or copper/aluminium joints  in the external network. When there is a voltage on the line, and current flowing, any bad connection is normally "repaired" and the connection maintained.

Once the connection back to the exchange is disconnected, this voltage is gone, so more frequent fault on the line are possible, which can take a long time to find.

DV has to be pushed out to all connections eventually, as there will be no phone equipment in the exchange any more after 2025.

Ahh, thanks for the explanation, much appreciated.

 I had an engineer out, last month because of a ppp lcp termination request problem which seems ok atm, he said my line to the cabinet and then to the exchange was one of the best he’d tested, so I’m hoping all will be good when I’m switched to DV (or I might change to broadband only package).

I think the broadband only package saves about £5 a month, if you are prepared to lose your phone number.

Yep that’s what it says on Bt website.

I may just keep my phone number though, a bit undecided yet, but just to clarify, sorry if it’s a silly question:

when bt switch me to DV can I then unplug my cordless landline phone and chuck it in the cupboard and my broadband will still work as it has been?

You plug your landline phone base unit, into the phone socket on the back of the Smart Hub 2, and it will work just as it did before. You do not need to do anything else to use your phone service.

Broadband is not affected by this.

Yep I know this but it’s not practical to where my SH2 is and I’m not to bothered about my calls over DV and just wanted to know that if I didn’t connect my phone or any other DV phone to my SH2, would it make any difference to my internet?

Yes. 

If you want you can change your phone package to pay as you go. This keeps your number and option to use the phone if you later want to get it out of the cupboard and use it.

You are completely overthinking this, you can do whatever you like with your voice service, it will have no impact whatsoever on your broadband as has been explained several times.

I have seen posts where someone going for the non telephony option ( £5 cheaper ) we’re offered telephony for an additional £2 or £3 rather than £5 ( if it makes a difference ) but if you simply want to keep what you have , but not use the DV phone service, then not plugging anything into the phone socket on the hub won’t affect broadband at all, I don’t know what ‘tone’ anyone calling your number would get , ringtone no reply ( the standard phone service would return that ) or is DV is clever enough to recognise no phone plugged in and would return an announcement like  ‘ the customer called is not currently taking incoming calls ‘  , but if you don’t want DV , but don’t want to remove it either..just don’t plug a phone in.
