Transfer BT landline to Sky

BT provides my landline + call charges

Sky provide my broadband

I want to combine these into one provider (Sky) for broadband + landline. I called Sky yesterday to obtain a rough quote of costs.

They said to initiate the process I would have to "inform BT of my intentions" and kick off the process.

How do I do this? Any idea for what BT number I need to call?

Re: Transfer BT landline to Sky

If you pay BT for line and calls and Sky for broadband, you are on a legacy ( and very poor value ) product called SMPF , shared metallic path facility…TBH , it’s odd you can still be on that as many years ago , Sky made pretty much an ultimatum to their broadband customers , join us for broadband and telephony ( so removing BT from the equation ) or find a new provider for broadband.

The info Sky have given you is not great , if you tell BT to ‘cease’ your telephone service , it will , by default cease your Sky broadband, leaving you without any service for a period, while you effectively get a ‘new’ line installed, with this type of SMPF , the broadband cannot ‘exist’ without a phone service to host it .

If your choice is to use Sky for both , it’s Sky that need to be organising  with BT , not you , if all you want is to not have BT at all , and are prepared for some downtime , call BT and ask for your line to be ceased , knowing that you will then have no Sky broadband service for the period it takes for you to then contact Sky ( again ) and ask them to re provide you as a broadband and telephone customer , that’s the only way BT can be involved if it’s Sky you want to use .

If you were leaning towards BT supplying both services and ditching Sky , then BT would be ‘driving’ the ordering process , but because that’s not what you want , BT have no involvement apart from potentially following a request from you to cease your ‘line’ , if that’s  what  you want , call BT and ask for a cease .

Re: Transfer BT landline to Sky

Thanks for your reply. I rather get the feeling that Sky have fobbed me off.

As you infer, I am on a legacy Sky BB  package and the Sky contact did not have a clear idea of how to handle my request.

It may be easiest for me to sign up with BT for a basic broadband + landline package, then cancel my Sky BB contract.

Re: Transfer BT landline to Sky

Chances are regardless of using BT or Sky , your telephone service will become IP based , so your phone will plug into the broadband router , so if switching to BT a new BT router will be supplied, if staying with Sky unless they recently sent you a router , they will need to supply a new one to.

It’s obviously your choice as to who you use .

Re: Transfer BT landline to Sky

Sticking with BT might simplify things a little, as no landline transfer would be required.

Maybe I should phone BT and ask them for a quote...

Re: Transfer BT landline to Sky

I suspect the ‘no offers’ , is because what you are on currently ( SMPF) is so rare that whatever algorithm/ software that provides ‘offers’ , won’t work on your particular circumstances, a call is probably needed unless a Mod offers to contact you .

Re: Transfer BT landline to Sky

Just bitten the bullet and ordered a broadband + PAYG phone package from BT.

They will automatically handle the change over from Sky broadband.
