What is the process for Managing Another Account?

My 89 year old mother-in-law has been with BT for decades. She cannot use the internet and therefore has never had an online account with BT. She does have an email address so that my wife and I can manage her Octopus Energy account. We are also on BT so I wanted to set up M-i-L with a BT online account but I can't work out how to do it. I thought I could add her under the 'Manage Another Account' section. I appeared to have succeeded in getting her BT account number set up with her email address and a password. A validation email was received on her email and this successfully confirmed her online account. However, on logging into that account there were few details, only a message saying something like "Multiple Accounts" with no apparent means of going any further. Now, if I try to use an alternative sign up technique I am told her email address is already in use.

Help!
