I have unsuccessfully tried to re-register several times. I get as far as a response to entering the zeros, which is a message flashing on / off so fast I cannot read it, but I have detected one word --- FAILED. What do I have to do next?

Text messaging isn't available on Digital Voice which you have.
Oh? What else am I going to find in the User Guide which does not work in the phone supplied with it? The more I learn about BT now, the more I ---- -- (left to your imagination)
Hi @clayto I’m afraid that you have bought the wrong phone for DV. It works in a legacy fashion but the User Guide assumes that you don’t have DV, so a lot of the contents does not apply to you. If it was supplied with DV then you need to contact BT and exchange it for the free HD Phone(s) normally supplied.
