digital voice

if i'm with digital voice and i move house, does my phone number move with me? i.e. does the phone number now belong to the hubs and no longer to the landline?

Re: digital voice

There is no reason why , assuming you are not moving outside the ‘exchange’ area that you can’t take your number with you to a relatively near by address , and although the DV system isn’t dependant on ‘exchanges’ as such , the requirement to keep phone numbers geographically linked to an area , means that if you move further away you can’t take the number with you , which is the same as it currently is with PSTN telephony

Re: digital voice

So normally the phone number stays with the address. And if I take my hubs with me, they will still work with whatever number there is in the new house - as long as there is a landline to the house, of course?

Re: digital voice

I have two hubs which I interchange occasionally.  Both pick up the correct number when they connect.  So  it is not tied to the hub, as such.

Re: digital voice

No the number does not stay with the house , a phone number reflects the geographical area , so if a number 01999-45**** was your town , village or suburb number range , and 01999-47**** were a nearby town , village or suburb  ( served from a different exchange ) you couldn’t take your 01999 45 number to the next town because their numbers are all 01999 47 numbers , if you moved somewhere within the 01999-45 exchange boundary you can take your number with you ,

Re: digital voice

Thanks, both. I do not WANT to take the phone number with me. I just wanted it confirming that the number stays with the landline as with the old system.

Re: digital voice

If you move anywhere in the country there's every chance you can take your number with you as I've seen that happen to friends of mine.

If you cancel broadband with digital voice it's highly likely the number will cease at the same time and then be returned to the carrier to be recycled.

Re: digital voice

If you moved out and didn’t take the number with you  , the number the line once had is made unavailable ( so anyone calling it would get number unavailable tone NU ) should the next occupant want telephone service , it’s very unlikely that they would want the same number the previous occupant had , and potentially people calling for the previous occupant, so generally there is a ‘start renumber’ order , so a new number is provided, or possibly the new occupant has moved from nearby within the same exchange area and want to bring their number with them from the old address .

It’s  absolute nonsense to say you can move anywhere in the country and take your number with you , you can’t, the UK is still committed to the geographical link between phone numbers and areas , so it’s rubbish to say you can take a (for example) Newcastle number 0191 *** **** to Lincoln 01522 ***** no reputable company with telephony via their proprietary IP telephony (  like BT DV ) should offer that , however if someone ported their number to a traditional VoIP provider that geographical link is broken , you can answer a number ported to  a VoIP provider anywhere in the country,  so you can achieve it by this method , but it’s not something that mainstream providers should offer , the linked number scheme is still wanted by organisations like the Ofcom  , and the  emergency services.

As far as the OP , if you are not bothered about the number , why the interest in what happens to your old number after you move out ?

Re: digital voice

To qualify my post above I should have stated I was referring to voip services. My friends moved from Benfleet, Essex with a landline code of 01702 to Buckinghamshire with a voip service and retained their number with no issue whatsoever.
