01202070757 phone number saying they are BT

Go to solution

This number called to say my IP address might be compromised and my internet speed was affected. They sent me an email during the call which looked like from BT with the address btcomms@info.bt.com so they obviously have both my phone number and my email address.

After asking them to call back later, I contacted BT in the online chat for Technical help, and was told nobody from BT had been in contact and my broadband speed was fine.

Must be a very clever scam if they are able to contact me at the correct number and email address.

When they did call back, this time it was from a mobile number 07482353558.

Just for others to be aware.

You can always check suspect numbers from sites such as this.

Report any e-mails that don't make sense or aren't expected to report@phishing.co.uk

Forward the e-mail to that address. And we also depend on posts like yours to alert us to any issues, so thanks. 😀

None of the displayed numbers will be real, these undesirables have ways of spoofing calling numbers to make them look real.

This is such an old con trick that I honestly believe the information to have been obtained as a result of BT's failure to ensure that the information was securely destroyed when they closed the Indian call centres.

As far as I know these call centres were run by private contractors and not BT themselves but regardless of that it was BT that were entrusted with private information and as such it was their responsibility to ensure it was securely destroyed

As regards how scammers get your email address and phone number.

No doubt you will have used/given your phone number and email address to any number of sites/businesses on the Internet  such as ecommerce or utility sites such as gas and electric or shops who email a receipt to you.

Any one of these sites could either have been compromised or some unscrupulous employee has sold the details to scammers.

If you use a BT email address it would tend to indicate you are a BT customer plus as BT are the biggest ISP so it is a calculated guess that you will most likely be a BT customer.

As has been pointed out scammers can spoof both phone numbers and email addresses very easily.

If you feel it is a scam most likely it is.

BT will never cold call you to tell you there is a problem with your Internet.

Often these callers do not know who you are and it is just luck they got you and you're a BT customer.

Before I had BT I had these calls on my VirginMedia 'phone - BT claming I had a security issue with by BT kit.

My mother who has no computer - has had calls from Microsoft informing her that her PC has a virus and they can fix it.

I always use my mobile number when buying anything online, as  it was my home number they used I suspect they must have got my details from BT.

Obviously that is possible but I suspect you will never know for sure.

Is your home phone not registered with any other company or place which while they are not selling anything they are online such as NHS, Council etc.

In any event as I said, BT will never cold call you.
