2 internet providers in same house?

Hi there, I'm getting quite frustrated at the lack of internet speeds in my area, as well as family using all of the bandwidth downloading and streaming at the highest qualities available. I only get around 30Mbps down 5Mbps up where we live, currently with Sky, and this is around the fastest in the area. Openreach website says there are no plans for fibre any time soon, so I'm stuck in a predicament.

I work from home and need a reliable internet connection to work effectively, and right now, with speeds lowering to as much as 500 Kbps down when people are using it in my household, it's getting incredibly frustrating. I am wondering if there is a way that I could get my own router with my own seperate connection? I'm not too clued up on internet stuff but as far as I'm aware we only have 1 line coming into the house so I'm not sure how it'd all work. The fastest speeds in my area apparently are with the BT Fibre Essentials Only package, with predicted speeds of 22-36Mbps download, so that would be what I'd get.

AFAIK, I think you'd need another copper line from the street cabinet to your house to increase your bandwidth. BT certainly supply multiple lines to businesses with a (more expensive) business contract, but I'm pretty sure they wouldn't do so for a residential customer.

Just order a second line from BT (I assume you wish to use BT as you are posting on a BT forum) make sure the agent understands you want a second line and not take over the original line.

The other option would be to examine a Fixed Wireless connection that uses the mobile phone system.

Things to remember if you do this:
Get a account that is designed for this, otherwise you could fall foul of "fair-use" clauses.
Don't "cheap out"; putting up an external antenna that faces the mobile tower will improve speeds significantly.
Speak to your neighbours, you are likely not the only one with the issue,  and they may have suggestions!

I only learn by making mistakes and owning up to them - boy do I learn a lot!

@flootdesigns

A cheaper option would be to buy your own router that has QoS (Quality of Service). That would allow you to prioritise your work requirements over streaming/gaming/etc.

Being on FTTC with Sky, that probably means the Asus DSL-AX82U, as that supports the authentication method Sky uses. Probably best to post on their forums for more advice.

Re: 2 internet providers in same house?

You can have as many lines as you want.

The only thing is the USO only applies to one line. Therefore if installing a secondary line involves additional Network Construction Charges, i.e. they need to increase capacity by building a secondary DP then you may be asked to pay for it.
