AC 2600 Mesh Disks - Will they work with full fibre?

Go to solution

We have AC2600 disks throughout my home to improve the wi-fi coverage. We are due to be upgraded to full fibre and digital voice shortly. My question is whether the disks will work with full fibre and presumably the new hub that will be supplied.

Thank you for any help on this.

No reason why they shouldn't, they should be agnostic to router.

Thank you. A bit of a daft question perhaps but it was prompted by BT's promotion of its full fibe home solution complete with different colour discs which made me wonder the specifications had changed owing to the move to full fibre.

BT supply 2 different versions of disks, Whole Home and Complete Wifi

The white Whole Home discs (which you have) are a stand alone mesh and the first disc needs to connect to the router via Ethernet and can be used with any router. They do not form a mesh with the router.

The black Complete Wifi discs form a mesh with the Smart Hub2 and can only be used with the Smart Hub2.

That's now much clearer, thank you for you for help. That begs the question of whether my existing BT Smart Hub works with full fibre or do I need to upgrade to a Smart Hub 2? I'd rather continue with my Smart Hub to avoid writing off hundreds of pounds that were spent on the discs.

It's unlikely that your current hub has a WAN socket needed to connect to ONT so you will need the SH2.  you can just change the SSID and wifi password of SH2 to that of existing hub and wifi devices will connect automatically without have to go round all your devices

Sorry, don't understand that. Your existing white discs will work with any router, just turn off the WiFi on the SH2 when it arrives if you don't want 2 WiFi networks.

Digital Voice will only work with the Smart Hub2.

I guess there are a couple of questions and I'm probably being thick so grateful for your indulgence.

1. Does upgrading to full fibre require the replacement of my existing BT Smart Hub with a BT Smart Hub 2? If it doesn't then I can use the existing Smart Hub with the AC2600 Mesh Disks.

However....

2. If we are retaining our landline (which we intend to do) then the existing Smart Hub won't work with digital voice which means we need Smart Hub 2. This In turn means the existing Mesh Discs won't work with Smart Hub 2 but if we change the SSID and passord of the new hub as per IM Jolly' suggestion then the existing Mesh Discs will work ?

The black Complete Wifi discs form a mesh with the Smart Hub2 and can only be used with the Smart Hub2.

3. But if we changed the settings on the Smart Hub 2 will that mean digital voice doesn't work?

Many thanks in advance.

You will need a new Smart Hub 2.

The existing disks will work with it.

The idea of changing the SSID etc. on the Smart Hub 2 to your existing SSID is because it is quicker/easier to do that than it is to change to the new SSID on each and every one of you devices.

Edit:  Sorry missed question 3...Those two things are not related.  Your question is a bit like asking if you put a different brand of petrol in the car would the lights be any brighter.  It should make no difference to Digital Voice...unless I've misunderstood you?

Currently your white discs will have their own network name (SSID) which may or may not be the same as the network name of your router.

When you move to the SH2 the network name of your discs will remain the same as it is now. Simply turn off the WiFi on the SH2.

For clarification, Digital Voice DOES NOT use WiFi.
