Can I plug in my complete wifi black disc to the LAN via an ethernet cable and use it as an access point, or can it only connect to the hub over wifi?

Yes. It'll use LAN as the backhaul instead of wifi.

No - just plug in the cable, and if it sees your hub as reachable on it, it'll switch over to using LAN. You can confirm that it's using Ethernet via hub manager.
