BT SmartHub 2 - difficulty logging in over wifi

Go to solution

I was recently sent a Smart Hub 2 to replace a Smart Hub which had become faulty.  After changing the SSID and wifi password to match my previous Hub, most 2.4GHz devices logged in without intervention. A couple of 5GHz devices required setting up via WPS. My dual band Samsung Tab A refuses to remain logged in. It's ok for a variable period then disconnects saying 'no internet'. If I try to reconnect, it complains of an incorrect password - but it's not. Eventually it reconnects, sometimes hours later, using the same password and...rinse and repeat.

The 2 wavebands were separated on my previous Smart Hub, and there was no problem with the Tab A. So far as I can see, they can't be separated on the Smart Hub 2, and I'm guessing that's the problem - but any thoughts? Workarounds? Thanks.

Its an issue with the Samsung Tab A when presented with two bands. I have the same device, but use a dual band wireless mesh, the same thing happens.

What seems to be the problem is that the Samsung chooses 5GHz as first choice, and if the signal becomes too weak, it disconnects, but does not reconnect to 2.4Ghz, and instead stays offline.

Unless you're moving to Digital Voice immanently, just buy another Smart Hub from Facebook Marketplace or similar. Shouldn't cost more than a few pounds.

@Keith_Beddoe thanks, that does make sense, though I don't get why it would show an 'incorrect password' error. Bit of a sledgehammer to crack a nut, but would connecting a WAP with separated wavebands and turning off wifi on the BT Hub be a solution?

@rbz5416 I'm definitely avoiding DV until it's mandatory. I did as you suggested and bought a replacement Smart Hub, albeit not from Facebook, as a  (possibly) temporary measure.

@Mark039

Yes, a separate WAP is one solution, I have a 2.4GHz one which is needed for our printer and a couple of bird boxes which do not like dual bands and mesh networks.

@Keith_Beddoe I'll go that route, I think.

Thanks both. Very helpful.
