I need some advice. I have a BT Smarthub that currently assigns all my devices an ip address via DHCP, including my Mac and my Synology NAS. Each device gets the same ip every time (address reservation) and all is working fine. I am planning to get a second NAS which I will use with a new 10Gb switch and my Mac which supports 10Gbe. I have been advised that it is better to have a static ip for any NAS on a network (even though I have not had problems to date with DHCP). So how do I go about doing that if I need to? I know from scanning this forum that setting a static ip should be done on the device itself and there is an option for this under Network on the Synology Control Panel. Can I just switch from DHCP to static on the NAS using the same ip as assigned by the Hub (192.168.1.177 say), or should I choose an address in the range 192.168.1.10 thru 63 to avoid the DHCP range? In a video I saw where a guy was setting up his NAS to use 10Gbe he simply set the already assigned DHCP ip to be static on the NAS and refreshed the connection; but I don't know if this works with a BT SmartHub, i.e. would the Hub not potentially assign the same ip to another device at some future point since the ip is in the DHCP range? Any advice appreciated, I am no network guru!

Definitely do not use the address assigned by DHCP, use an address outside of the range of the pool. i.e 192.168.1.1-192.168.1.63
Set the address on the NAS. You will also probably need to set the Gateway address on the NAS, if so, set it to 192.168.1.254
Thanks, that's great
