Connect direct to ONT?

Go to solution

This page Openreach modem (ONT) explained: Ports and models available | BT Help   implies I could continue using my modem with an ONT.  I don't really want a Smart Hub (I was sent one two years ago) as I connect my Deco mesh via PPPoE to the modem.  I guess I would need the SH if I wanted DV.

Or have I misunderstood?

When you say modem, do you mean router? The ONT is a modem, you can connect any PPPoE capable router to it, not another modem. However, you will not have access to Digital Voice.

@licquorice

Thanks.

I use an old HG612 modem now and then connect my Deco M5 mesh to that under PPPoE.  I don't use a router.  So, if we ever get fibre I could continue as now.  I was slightly puzzled that no one ever seems to mention doing this.

As I am old, I still like  proper telephones so DV with an adapter may be needed but I will cross that bridge if/when OR arrive here.  Meanwhile CF/Zen is at my front door.

Last hurdle on leaving BT would be getting a new non-openworld email address.

The Deco M5 is a router.

But yes you could connect the M5 directly to the ONT and it probably would not need any changes made to the configuration.

As @dave44 says, the Deco is a router, just connect it to the ONT instead of the Hg612.
