DV phone with Ethernet connection?

NOT asking for a friend🫠 I am being a potential cheapskate but am on a learning mission.

EE fibre 500 installed 11/24.

Currently still have TT copper Bus line with BB and phone. This is cabled into my home office/studio with TT hub and 8way Ethernet switch feeding computers etc.

Currently the Fibre WiFi doesn't really reach this room.

Have been investigating Mesh options for the future but realise I  could be looking at £300+ to have Ethernet connections at both ends.

The alternative for less than ten quid is a 25metre Ethernet cable, following the route of the existing copper plugged into the Ethernet switch.

My question  is are there DV phones that will work directly from an Ethernet switch port.

The ideal setup would be one phone plugged into the phone port of the EE hub and another plugged into the switch port.

Thanks

David

Re: DV phone with Ethernet connection?

You can get adapters to convert an ethernet cable into a phone line.  Effectively it’s separate from the network and just used as a phone line.  Usually, it’s master socket to patch panel, then patched to an ethernet socket in the room you want.  I doubt very much if it could work through the switch and that connection would be just for phone line, as I said before.

Of course, if you are running an ethernet connection to this room you could always just run an ordinary phone extension alongside it.

Re: DV phone with Ethernet connection?

It also occurs to me that as my existing cordless phones work throughout the house, when I  migrate to DV, there is no reason why I would not get similar coverage. This would  mean that the 25 metre Ethernet cable to the switch and if required a repeater would be a simple option.

Rapidly coming to the conclusion that in my situation, DV is a PIA and will at best cost me £80 to replace 3 phones and another £300 if I went for 6+ Mesh.

Re: DV phone with Ethernet connection?

The DV phones use Dect not ethernet, also I believe you cannot use Dect extenders with them so you are limited.  The green socket on the SH2 does provide a Pots port so you could connect a telephone/extension/another Dect system.

You can also connect a non BT VOIP phone to your ethernet for use with a VOIP supplier but that would not use DV and probably has to be on another number.

Re: DV phone with Ethernet connection?

@DigitalDave

I can't see a problem. Your existing setup won't change other than unplugging your base station from the existing phone socket and plugging it into the hub. If the hub is adjacent to the socket the base station currently uses, your coverage will be exactly the same as now.

As you won't be using the built in DECT base station of the hub, if you do need to extend the range of your existing base station a DECT extender should work fine.

Re: DV phone with Ethernet connection?

@DigitalDave sorry I missed your message 3- assumed it was an reply that got sent prematurely🙄

If your current Dect system  gives coverage throughout your house, then it is highly likely that a BT/EE DV system will give similar coverage.

If you want to retain being a cheapskate then you could use the earlier of various options:

a) Simply plug your existing Dect phone system  into the SH2/3 router and turn off Dect on the router, then connect the router to your switch with an Ethernet cable. As @licquorice has said you could use a Dect extender if required with your existing system.

b) Use your existing Dect system as in "a" above but add a single DV phone leaving Dect turned on in the router

c)  Use multiple DV phones and dispose of your Dect system (eventually).

You could start with "a" and slowly migrate to "b" the "c" or stay on any. The migrate option would mean you  do not need to move all your saved numbers right at the start.

There are also other options that could be looked at.

The biggest problem I see is you making a decision on what you want to do and how to achieve it.

Re: DV phone with Ethernet connection?

@countrypaul you can't disable DECT on the hub, but it works happily alongside other DECT base stations.

I use both DV and a Panasonic DECT base station.

@licquorice Good point about being unable to disable Dect on the SH2 - my mistake

Re: DV phone with Ethernet connection?

Thanks to everyone for the advice. Wow this has become a mega learning  curve. For a start, I never realised what Dect phones were. Just took them for granted  as "cordless phones".  25 metres of cable I understand and 6+ mesh with and without Ethernet ports is new territory and don't even start me on Repeaters that do or don't use the same SSID.

The good news is I have an unopened bottle of  Southern  Comfort that might help 😜
