Deactivated 2.4GHz on my BT Smart Hub 2 to force 5GHz WiFi, but now the download speed has worsened.

Hey, y'all -

Just to give some context, I have the BT Smart Hub 2 - I was getting tired of my devices arbitrarily switching between 2.4GHz/5GHz for WiFi, I preferred the speed I got with the 5GHz connection, rather than the slightly better connection/lower speeds that the 2.4GHz offered. I was getting closer to speeds of 200Mbps when connected to the 5GHz band.

So, I decided to deactivate the 2.4GHz band to force my devices onto 5GHz permanently, I did this through the Hub Manager. I had a slight hiccup as my devices wouldn't connect to the router at all after, so I restarted it, and then the devices reconnected.

But now that they're on the 5GHz connection, I'm not getting the speeds of 200Mbps I had before. Instead, now every device seems incapable of going over around 75Mbps. And it can't be a signal issue as I took my laptop right next to the router and still, the download speed was subpar.

Anybody got a clue on what I can do to get the 5GHz speeds I had before?

Many thanks.

2.4GHz gives a greater range than 5GHz  so the behaviour your describe is not unusual.

As your device moves out of range of the 5GHz carrier it will switch to 2.4 due to the low 5GHz signal strength.

If you feel that the 5GHz range is poorer than it should be, it could be because your router is not sited in the best position.
