Does the SH2 support 10.0.0.0 these days?

Go to solution

I saw a post from a while back mentioning the following are supported:

  • Class A IP addresses. Configurations range from 10.0. 0.0 to 10.255. 255.255
  • Class B IP addresses. Configurations range from 172.16. 0.0 to 172.31. 255.255
  • Class C IP addresses. Configurations range from 192.168. 0.0 to 192.168. 255.255

I was setting up a test environment for some DEV work and the SH2 was lying around spare so I wanted to use this as an AP. We all know the steps, switch off DHCP and assign the SH2 with an IP within the subnet of your existing DHCP server but outside of its scope....then you can use it as an AP.

Unfortunately the DEV environment is 10.1.8.0/24 and it seems I cannot set this as the hub informs me of an error that the IP is not valid when trying to give the SH2 10.1.8.1/24 255.255.255.0.

Now I can certainly change the DEV environment without issue but I am curious if Class A is just not supported anymore? I googled it and saw on the BT Business forums that it is not on the SH2 for business.

These ip settings are not valid on the BT Business... - BT Business Community

Just wondering if someone can confirm it before I change to 192 or 172....

Thanks.

I don't know whether it applies in this case, but I've found the SH2 to be very tempermental.

If you set an IP incompatible with the current range, even if said range is turned off, it reverts back to defaults.  Often it doesn't even report this as an error.  What I've found is turn on DHCP, set the range to the range you want, set the static IP and save it.  If that works, turn off DCHP and save it again.

Yeah I did observe this when changing the IP address to 192.168.100.1, I had to setup a matching DHCP range before it would take, then I could switch off DHCP.

But for the 10.0.0.0 it just wont have it and actually gives an error about it not being valid, unlike the one about DHCP which reports invalid range.

Interesting.  I've got a spare.  I'll experiment.

No.  Doesn't seem to want to know.  I even tried the more standard 10.0.0.1 255.0.0.0 and it insists it's invalid.  I notice it doesn't offer the range as an option, just 192.168, 172.16-172.31 and "custom".

Yeah and custom has to fit within B and C.....A isnt there any more.

Oh well, thanks for confirming, was totally worth checking, appreciate the time you took on it.

"...appreciate the time you took on it".

No contest.  It was either that or go and put the laundry on.
