EE ID for activating WiFi on Smarthub 2

Before you read this I ask you to read it all 😣

I have  a BT smarthub 2 and  an EE Hybrid Connect unit to overcome the very bad Broadband reception in our area.

(My  phone bills come from BT.)

I have three computers on an ethernet private network.

The router is wired to  computer 1 which is about10m from the other two, plugs into a broadband (openreach) socket.

A stand-alone printer close to computer 1 is accessed by Wifi.

( there was another WiFi printer adjacent to computers 2 &3 but this died).

The wifi works.

When I look at the Network on the Win 11 computers, the printers are present.

My Smartphone recognises the  wifi network, as does the TV which runs of a Freesat box.

iPlayer works perfectly off the same network (I think).

This is all a bit boring , BUT:  we had asked the engineer who installed the Smarthub2 and Hybrid Connect to disable the WiFi  as the ethernet  network seemed to work ok.

Networking the computers didn't actually achieve any thing after I enabled the wireless printer, so I never bothered checking whether they still showed up in the Network section of Settings.

They don't!!

The third computer is a 32bit XP3, which is also plugged into the ethernet.

I thought: I'll try connecting them wirelessly , but  I realised I'd have to set up a wireless network.

I ran a check to see if all the computers could do this, and there was no wireless facility on any of them.

I'll need the dongles for all of them I thought...............but how does the printer work??

Next step activate the router's wireless mode. Scanned the QR code on the router using my smartphone, and discovered I'd need an EE ID!

Anyone know where I'll find this? and thanks for getting this far😁

Re: EE ID for activating WiFi on Smarthub 2

I suspect the EEID is for the Wi-Fi hotspot rather that the hub’s own private network.  Have a look at the SSID and password on the card on the back of the hub.  This will be the connection details you need.

As far as the printer goes, if it is not already wireless capable you have three choices.  1) A professional grade printer can probably be retro-fitted with a wireless card.  (If it’s domestic grade, no chance).  2) Attach it to one of the computers as a local printer and then share it with the network.  You can Google how to do this.  3) You may be able to get a wireless printer server off somewhere like Amazon.  (I’ve not seen them on sale for years, though).

I have no idea why you think you need an EE id in order to enable WiFi on the Smart Hub, you don't.

"Scanned the QR code on the router using my smartphone, and discovered I'd need an EE ID!"

You'd be better going to 192.168.1.254 on a computer connected to the Hub via an ethernet cable. Then input the Admin password (on the pull-out label attached to the hub) and you'll get to the Hub Manager with which you can turn on WiFi.
I've also found that scanning the QR code on an EE hub does indeed ask for an EE ID, which BT customers don't have, and the EE documentation (unhelpfully) doesn't mention access via 192.168.1.254
