Ethernet connection is fine but I am only getting only 350 mbps over wifi

Hi

Openreach engineers installed a fibre connection to the house last week and I have been testing my internet connection since then. They gave me Bt smart hub 2 and with an ethernet cable I am getting 850 900 Mbps but even when I am sitting next to the router with the laptop, speeds reduce to 300-350 Mbps on wifi. Do you think that the wifi speeds can be improved by changing router's settings ? Or should I just buy a new router?

What is it you intend doing with in excess of 350M on a single device?

It is impossible to say what your laptop is capable of without knowing the full spec of the laptop along with what programs that are running on it.

The speed/data is not injected into the laptop from the router. The wireless card on the laptop determines the speed that the laptop can "pull" the data into it. The router only determines how much speed is available.

Have you tested the wireless speed on other devices?  Have you made sure that no other devices are using the Internet when you are carrying out the speed test?

One of the first thing to do is to ensure that your laptop's wireless card is capable of faster speeds and has the most up to date drivers from the card manufacture's website. Do not rely on the Windows ones.

@ethernet55

Difficult question to answer as there are so many variables such as the number of WiFi devices that you have that were connected when you were testing your speed.

For example until next week we still  have FTTC with a download speed of 52 Mbps which we easily get with a laptop connected via Ethernet but we only get around 15 to 20 Mbps with WiFi as we have a lot of WiFi smart devices & CCTV cameras.
