Extremely poor WIFI in house, low speeds and connection dropping out.

Hi all.

So we're with bt full fibre 900, and moved house last month and brought bt with us, in the old house connection was good and stable. However ever since moving house and getting bt set up, we've had extremely low speeds, often hitting the kbp/s or just completely cutting out, however the hub always seems to be a steady blue. We have 3 wifi discs, none of which have seemed to help connection issues, in fact I've noticed that during peak hours, if I disable all the discs i tend to get a more steady connection. Using a speedtest on fast.com now directly in front of the hob gets us anywhere between 12 mbps to 200, however during some hours we do get good speeds, topping out at around 600mbps, but this seems to be rare and maybe stays for around an hour before dropping again, currently at time of writing I'm getting 110mbps on wifi beside the hub.

There have been many engineers out to look at the issues, an Openreach engineer came out and claimed he resolved the outside issue, and said its an inside issue causing the poor Wi-Fi. Today a home specialist came out, he changed the smart hub 2, and the cables, however this didn't help fix the speeds with them being from around 10-120 mbps. However cabled directly into the hub he was getting the 900mbps.  He mentioned maybe getting a 3rd party router, and see if that helps the Wi-Fi, but he wasn't sure if it would, and still thinks its maybe an outside issue, but left before really giving me a certain answer.

So I don't really know what to do, the inside engineer thinks its an outside issue, and vice versa for the outside engineer. Are there any good recommendations for a 3rd party router, that would give good high reliable speeds? Or would I be better off ringing bt to try to get another "outside" engineer out.

Many thanks in advance

@TormentedToast

So I don't really know what to do, the inside engineer thinks its an outside issue,

I'm no technical guru but if you get 900mbs connected but the wifi is sluggish then how that can be caused by an external issue seems a tad far fetched to me!

I'll wait to have my knuckles rapped by the forum experts!

@CarlushaConsider your knuckles rapped.😀

Yes there are many outside issues which can effect WiFi, just as there are also many internal issues that could do the same.

As regards a third party WiFi 6 router, it certainly may give the OP better connectivity than the BT hub but, if the OP is on digital voice the hub has to be used as the main device.

Thanks for the replies!

Don't use digital voice, so that isn't an issue, I'm assuming if I do get the 3rd party router it wont work with the discs BT have sent me? Will I have to buy separate 3rd party extenders for other parts of the house? I live in an average sized detached 3 bedroom house, with the ONT and SH2 in the front corner of the living room,

Thanks for the help!

Re: Extremely poor WIFI in house, low speeds and connection dropping out.

What speeds do you get if you plug an ethernet cable into the back of the hub and connect it to a PC or Laptop?

So I went out and bought a tp-link archer axe75 router and replaced my sh2 and that seems to have fixed the issue, so far anyway. I appreciate the help thanks guys!

My Wi-Fi router is on around 1 bar and I live near my city centre and the avg download speed is 12mbps and it keeps disconnecting and reconnecting on a lot of my devices
