Just took a call from a local number in Wellingborough Northamptonshire. 01933 276075. Male claimed to be checking on slow internet speeds on our line and would call back at 15.00 hours today.
Is this number a genuine BT engineers number? Called the Operator on 100 who was worse than useless and suggested I call Directory Enquiries at some extortionate charge.
Can anyone help please?
Thanks

Re: Genuine BT caller?
Generally ISP’s don’t make unsolicited calls saying they are concerned about someone’s Internet performance, so if you haven’t complained, it’s likely the call is of a nefarious nature.
Scammers ‘spoof’ the phone number they seem to be calling from , the call probably wasn’t originated in Wellingborough

It is a scam.
BT or Openreach will never cold call you to tell you there is a problem with your line, broadband or anything else. If you get such a call just hang up.

Re: Genuine BT caller?
A simple rule.
Regard ALL unsolicited calls as a scam. If there is any slight possibility it is genuine, call back on a publicly published number for the purported caller.
