I have recently moved into a house that has various phone cables and no idea if there is an active phone line or where to even begin setting up broadband. Can anyone help with some simple steps to get me started please 😊?
Well in some respects just ordering broadband will take care of most of this, but if its a copper service provided and you dont have an engineer install it because the infra is there already....then I guess you still need to find the master socket. The Master Socket is usually, but not always, near where the phone line enters the property, if you have overhead cables on poles then this is easier to spot, if cables are underground then the master will be usually, again not always, at the front of the house on the ground floor.
Another thing to do is to visit here: BT Broadband (btwholesale.com)
Enter your address and you can post the results here and its possible to determine what services are available, if you do post the info here please obscure your address.
Thank you @naylor2006 😊 that's helpful. So I appear to have a double socket and broadband is available at my address when I enter it online.
So am I best to just order the broadband and will it be as simple as plugging it in without the need for a phoneline? (Sorry I am not tech at all 🤦🏼)
Thanks, Katie
Does it say on the checker you can receive any fibre services like FTTP? You can post here if you like, because if you can a new device will be fitted to replace the Master Socket during the install.
Does the double socket you have found have any markings on it and are the ports different from one another?
You can order broadband without a phone service if you don't require telephony. Just order it, a router will be sent to you in the post which you will just need to plug in.
Thank you so much
@naylor2006 can you explain that please 😊?
You need to post the whole screen, there is no useful information on that portion.
Im not one of the really proper proper experts here on older technology but it looks to me like there is just copper services at your premises unless you have a separate fibre provider in the area or even Virgin Cable.....if you scroll to the right a bit you should be able to see what speeds you can expect, I assume it will be 50 or below but there is alot more info at the top missing from the screenshot, worst case just copy all the text out.
EDIT: Have seen the rest now....
No fibre there im afraid on Openreach, if you want fast internet you are out of luck unless there are any other non Openreach providers there.
What does this double socket you mention look like?
