Hi.
I've BT broadband and WiFi throughout the home. As it's a new build house, we have ethernet points in each bedroom.
I'm trying to set time limits for the ethernet connection points so no internet access from 9pm, so the kids aren't tempted to play online through the night. Is this possible and, if so, how do I do it, please? I've searched Google but drawn a blank.
I'm fine with the Wifi as I've been able to add sleep times for that.
Also, anyone know how I can prevent internet bridging of devices from mobile phone internet access, please?
Thank you on advance.
Depending on your router, you can prohibit Internet access to specified MAC addresses at desired times of day. Obviously if the device under consideration uses randomised MAC addresses this is no use. I have a BT HH6 and it works on that.
This allows you to stop a PC say between 21:00 and 06:00, or something like an IP camera (so it cannot report to say China)
Presumably your bedroom Ethernet ports are fed from a Patch panel which in turn is supplied from the BT hub.
You could connect an Ethernet switch to your BT hub and then feed the Patch Panel Ethernet ports from the Ethernet switch ports. The Ethernet switch requires to be powered by electricity in order to work so you could connect that to the electrical socket via a timer.
This would allow you to set the timer to turn off the Ethernet switch at what ever times you decide and thus cutting the Ethernet feed to the bedrooms.
If you wanted a particular room not to be turned off you would just connect one of the BT hub's Ethernet ports to the corresponding Ethernet port on the patch panel rather than having it go through the Ethernet switch.
If by " internet bridging of devices from mobile phone " you mean using the phone as a wifi hotspot, the best way is to take the phones off the kids at night until they learn the house rules.
You can turn off the hotspot via the phones settings but it is easy to turn it back on. I don't know of a way to permanently disable the hotspot facility on mobile phones other than you could try and contact your mobile phone company and ask if they can turn of the facility at their end.
