Neighbours WiFI Extender causing line errors

Hi All,

Looking for some help with an unusual problem. We started experiencing WiFi drop outs and very slow internet speeds (download) called out BT/Openreach and their engineers did an investigation, replaced all the lines from the street to the pole next to the house and then after further investigation decided the the neighbours WiFi extender was causing the issues.

When switched the WiFi extender is switched on there is feedback down the line (neighbour is with Vodafone) to where it becomes shared which then apparently pushes errors down our leg of the line causing the router to constantly reset. With the WiFi extender switched on there are 10,0000's of errors when it is switched off there are virtually 0 errors. 

We work constantly from home and the neighbour is being a bit difficult as they only need this WiFi extender when their daughter visits so she can work but he is wanting to leave this extender switched on which makes it virtually impossible to work during in the day (or stream tv in the evening).

From my understanding of the issue changing the channel of the router would not help as the line errors are causing the router to reset and this is prior to the Broadband singnal being sent to the WiFi. Is there anything I can do to block/stop the signals causing errors on the line?

have you tried simply moving the router to a different electric socket especially if it is currently connected to a socket on a dividing wall with you and neighbour

Yes moved the router itself to a different location and electric socket, it's the errors coming back down the line that is the issue. Zero errors at thee street, some errors on the pole, lots of errors at the master socket. So it somehow is causing feedback down the line.

It sounds as though the extender is faulty and causing REIN to cause errors on your line.

Might be worth buying a replacement extender for your neighbour although there is no guarantee that it will solve the problem.

If the wireless extender is using the mains wiring to connect to their router, then they can cause a lot of interference to VDSL signals if its close to your phone wiring.

TP Link extenders used to be the ones causing most interference, but TP Link issued a utility to change the utilisation frequencies to avoid interference to VDSL.

Does this interference feedback down the phone line? It's the neighbours WiFi extender that is causing the issue with the router/master socket.

Plus we are totally detached from them, so no party walls etc.

I would agree with  that you should liaise with your neighbour to see if you can purchase another wifi extender for him in order to see if that fixes the problem.

If it doesn't work you can always return the wifi extender and get your money back, if it works it might be worth "gifting" it to the neighbour provided he agrees to use it.

Does this interference feedback down the phone line? It's the neighbours Wi-Fi extender that is causing the issue with the router/master socket.

If it uses Powerline type adapters, then they transmit a lot of radio frequency interference which will get picked up, even through a party wall, as its quite likely their mains wiring is just on the other side.

The most likely point of pickup is going to be within your own internal phone wiring, especially if your home hub is some distance from you master socket.

The fact that its a Wi-Fi extender is not relevant, any type of Powerline type extender can cause this issue.

I assume its not affecting their Vodaphone connection speed? In that case all you can do is to keep any internal wiring as short as possible and make sure the home hub is plugged into a filtered master socket, and you have no other extension phone wiring connected, as that would be acting as an aerial, and making the problem worse.
