My ongoing problem started when BT switched us all over to Digital Voice & made me have the new hub, so we no longer have proper landline phones. I (and a lot of other people) had landline phones in case of power cuts, and of course this means when there is a power cut & internet/WiFi goes down (or when it does it's fault thing) I'm more or less cut off from the outside world as my mobile signal is only reliable when WiFi is on, or I go outside & wander around hoping for a signal.
I can kind of understand why they're changing to DV, but they really haven't thought of all the consequences, have they!
@Groo Not sure of the criteria but with no, or very poor mobile, you may have been able to get a battery backup - albeit for a few hours - for the hub? Or you could buy one. I’m sure if you search the forum there’ll be a solution to the lack of mobile for backup.
As to your current issue, it’s all a bit strange isn’t it? Had you noticed a big reduction in your broadband speed - as shown in the MyBT app - when you went over to the new hub?
I can cope with the random mobile signal, it's a fact of life where I live!
Yes, current issue is a bit strange, but I'm at a loss as to how to get BT to do what the Openreach engineer said they need to do (and which they said they'd booked to do last week but it didn't happen & when I phoned again yesterday there was no note about it on my account); I've really had enough of webchats, engineers & phone calls over 8 weeks - life is too short 😐
As for the broadband speed, when it's working it is just as fast with the new hub as it used to with the old hub, so nothing makes any sense does it! It's never been faster than about 25 but that is good enough for what I use it for, even streaming.
I do appreciate your (and everyone else's) input; makes me feel like I'm not totally alone!
Not only do I am the same problem as you with the Wifi dropouts I also rely on this for my mobile as my signal here is rubbish, no matter who the provider is for a mobile connection.
I have refused to on on DV because if they cant get the basics right then there is no hope for my landline phone. And like you, I don't want to be isolated and cut off from the world!
I do believe that we are being blocked by BT for any work to be done by Openreach! It really seems that way and I think its because they are spending money on DV rollouts they are not interested in spending money on anyone who has old connections. (I dont have full fibre here, only fibre to the box then copper to my house).
Yes! we are not alone and probably there are many more of us too!
Unless I’m very much mistaken the issue that started it all off on this thread was that the internet would fail every so often including, and this the important bit - fixed wired Ethernet devices. Like the OPs TV.
Appreciate the thread title but early on it was said it affected Ethernet connections too. Which pointed to a hub or broadband issue. Rather than specifically WiFi.
Hence why there’s been numerous visits I believe, replacement hubs, lots of frustrating chat sessions, a new master socket etc..
It’s very odd. Broadband speed has not changed - think it was 25Mbps - since the DV enabled hub was swapped over. Which is when the problems began.
TBH it seems a bit low for a FTTC connection, but @Groo could be a fair distance from the street cabinet / DSLAM or on a lower speed offering, so perhaps shouldn’t read too much into that.
And it sounds like the last Openreach engineer must have disconnected the ‘landline/ PSTN’ connection at the cabinet. So there’s no dial tone to check for a noisy line.
Unfortunately it seems the saga continues.
Yes, I'm approx 1.2km from cabinet & I suspect the copper cable up to my place is ancient.
Do you also have drop outs etc when connected directly with Ethernet too?
Not sure what you mean. Only my TV is connected via ethernet & only needed if I happen to want to watch iPlayer.
I'm not going to buy another ethernet cable to use with my laptop, especially considering that when internet/WiFi drops, TV ethernet drops too.
@pddco Oops, sorry!
