ONT and SH2 connection

Would appreciate advice on ONT/BT Hub connection prior to ordering FTTP.  Existing set-up is: in living room; wireless broadband “brick” connected to router; one port connected to Gig switch; one port of which connected to another Gig switch in sitting room via 25 metres Cat 6 external cable.

Ideally, for easy FTTP install, I would prefer the ONT in the sitting room but have the Hub in the living room where we have a corded ‘phone, preferably replace it with the BT Essentials.  I thought it would be easy to connect the ONT and Hub via the two switches, but reading this forum I gather this is not possible? If not, options seem to me:

  • Use the Cat 6 cable as dedicated link between ONT and Hub?  But I need to retain the switch in the sitting room, so I would have to install a second Cat 6 cable from Hub in living room?
  • Or – more simply - locate both ONT and Hub in the sitting room and forego the Essentials ‘phone and its additional functions, using DV Adapter for the corded ‘phone in the living room (but not future-proof).

Any other options?  Sorry for the ramble and hope it makes sense!

Re: ONT and SH2 connection

One other option might be to use your existing CAT6 between ONT (sitting room) and SH2  (lounge) and use Powerline adapters from SH2 to switch (sitting room).

The more obvious solution is to run another CAT6 cable parallel to the existing one.

Do your switches support VLan ? if so you might be able to isolate the ethernet from ONT to SH2 that way.

Re: ONT and SH2 connection

Many thanks, I'll look in to powerline adapters.

Both switches are Netgear gs105, which I gather don't support VLan.

As you say, another solution is to duplicate the Cat 6 cable - simple technology for a nerd like me - just need to widen the existing holes!

Re: ONT and SH2 connection

With the right switches, it would be possible to set up in the manner that you've thought about.  But you would need to meticulously log what you've done, so that when it all goes wrong in 6 month time you know what you've done.  You also need to consider the capacity of the switch-to-switch connection as it can easily become a bottleneck.

I only learn by making mistakes and owning up to them - boy do I learn a lot!

Re: ONT and SH2 connection

Many thanks for advice. I'll see how the install goes, then I'll have a clearer idea of what's best to do.
