We're in the midst of a self-build and want to put a small duct through the external wall where the BT incoming cable will come into the house to a master socket, before we finishing closing up that but of wall ready for plasterboard. Easier to do now than make a mess of freshly painted walls!
Is there any guidance on what height above ground this should be, above or below damp proof course etc?
This has nothing to do with BT consumer, you need to ask Openreach for advice.
Have you registered your new build with Openreach, otherwise there would be no infrastructure provided?
They will also give you an estimate of costs, as its likely to be fibre only, which does not have a master socket.
Thanks for the reply @Keith_Beddoe . We are in a fairly rural spot and Openreach haven't put full Fibre in our area yet (and no plans to in next few years), but there is a copper line that runs right past us to our nearest neighbour. Virgin have put Fibre in the village but it was before our site was residential and they now won't extend to us either.
I know it's Openreach that put the infrastructure in and looked at registering with them before but was then advised on here to start with the provider who would then trigger Openreach, but just wanted to know what we'd need to allow for inside the house. We've found a guide on Openreach for builders, and might just phone them to see if we can get advice...if I can find a number.
As DIY self-builders we seem to fall in the gap of information available!
If your new property is registered on the Royal Mail Postcode Database, then in theory, you should just be able to place an order with BT, assuming you are going to use them. If not, then you would have to do the same with a different provider.
If its not registered yet, then there is not much you can do at the moment, apart from get advice from Openreach, by filling in the registration form which should give you access to their portal.
Thanks @Keith_Beddoe , yes it has been registered for a few years now and we've been living on site for two (think Grand Designs static caravan), so hopefully we can proceed via BT 🤞🏻
