Re: Replace BT Smart Hub 2 with netgear R7000 router

You don't need VLAN details, that is a modem function carried out by the ONT.

If you are going to use Digital Voice, you don't need a PPPoE connection, the WAN port needs to be configured as Static IP with the details I just posted rather than a PPPoE connection.

OK thanks for helping I'll try your setup tomorrow afternoon. Knowing my luck it probably won't work and I'll end up sending you screenshots .

Last question. In addition to your settings should I disable WiFi on the Smart Hub  and have dchp WiFi on the netgear router?

Just out of curiosity, why do you feel you need ExpressVPN?

Familiar with it. Do you use a VPN?

Re: Replace BT Smart Hub 2 with netgear R7000 router

Traffic on the internet is encrypted by HTTPS today anyway.  Using a third party VPN is just encrypting the encryption.

The only time I use a VPN is when I want to hide where I am based, so I can bypass regional restrictions etc.  And then I use a client based VPN.

Have you got a better alternative to using a VPN? E.g tor, wired only not wireless, Linux etc

Re: Replace BT Smart Hub 2 with netgear R7000 router

@Jake12 you will need DHCP on both devices as you will have 2 networks. Up to you if you use both or disable WiFi on the hub.

Re: Replace BT Smart Hub 2 with netgear R7000 router

Well you still haven't said what you are using it for, so that question is impossible to answer without more information.

Re: Replace BT Smart Hub 2 with netgear R7000 router

As @WSH has said there is no need for anything. The only reason for VPNs is to circumvent geo restrictions or adult content restrictions.

Others will disagree, but in my view it is just snake oil.
