Re: Replace BT Smart Hub 2 with netgear R7000 router

Go to solution

BT will not swap your SH2 for a SH3 as a matter of routine. You would need to recontract to a package that requires the SH3, which as you already have a SH2 which works on all the BT packages they would just leave you with the SH2.

You could always ask for one but I suspect the answer will be no. The only sure way of getting a SH3 is to be a new customer.

As has already been said you would be better spending your money on a WAP and if you must have a VPN get a VPN package that is device specific rather then on the router.

Don't fall for the hype about having a router VPN. You will find it more bother than its worth in comparison to a device VPN and will most likely slow all your Internet traffic down.

The Netgear can simply be converted to a WAP as @bobpullen  has posted. Forget about the VPN aspect.

So a typical BT internet package is not compatible with BT SH3 ie I cannot buy SH3 off EBay and swap with SH2 on my existing internet package?

Would dedicated VPN routers (routers that come pre installed with VPN) e.g. aircove for ExpressVPN slow down the network?

@Jake12  The SH3 has only been released in the last couple of weeks. Only a few select 'special' people have apparently so far been 'given' SH3's to test but it might be possible that very recent new customers are being sent them, who knows.

The SH3 isn't as far as anyone is aware, supposed to even be available on the worlds most famous auction site, but it is. Someone has got hold of two and has been selling them for around £80.

You'd probably as has been said earlier, be better off buying a EE branded router WiFi 6/7 from said auction site for around £30.

Where does it say a SH3 will not work with a typical BT Internet package?

What I said was "You would need to recontract to a package that requires the SH3, which as you already have a SH2 which works on all the BT packages they would just leave you with the SH2".

The SH3 works with all BT Broadband packages as does the SH2 so BT would not give you a new SH3 because your SH2 already works. BT would only give you a SH3 if you were on an ADSL package and you were moving to a Fibre package because your ADSL router would not work with Fibre.

If you can get one from ebay you can replace your SH2 with it.

You are making heavy weather of this so I will bow out and leave you to it.

If you do an Internet search "Do router VPNs slow Internet connection" you will find the answer and an explantion regarding it.

Read carefully: If I buy my OWN BT SH3  off EBay can I swap my SH2 with the SH3 without any router reconfiguring?/
