Slow Access Point

Hi 👋 

I’ve just had the BT smart hub 2 installed with speeds around 400mbps in the house.  I’ve ran an ethernet cable to my summer house, connected to a TP Link access point.  Speeds in the summer house are only around 60mbps though…. any advice?

What device are you using to measure the speed, linking to what site and connected how? eg. iPad to BT site using Ethernet (just an example which is not really possible!).

I’ve tested the speed on my iPhone with the Speedtest app and also on PlayStation.

I doubt the access point is capable of any higher speed. You have unrealistic expectations

It’s a TP-Link TL-WA901N Says it’s good for 450mbps?

What model is the TP link AP? Which PS model, and which iPad model?

How was the PS connected, WiFi to the AP?

The summer house has a tp link WA901N connected with Cat 8 Ethernet.  We have a PS4 and smart tv showing speeds of around 50 - 60mbps…. Thanks

…all connected to Wi-Fi (there’s no ethernet ports on WA901N)

802.11n is specified upto 300mbs, though by using multiple aerials a higher throughput may be achieved - this is likely to apply when multiple devices are in use at the same time though.

300mbs might only be achieved in ideal conditions and would be the raw throughput so you are very unlikely to see anywhere close to that on a single device. Any overlap in the signal from other devices, including neighbours, anything in the 2.4GHz range would potentially adversely affect the throughput.

The latter versions of PS4 have gigabit Ethernet cards but in reality you'll never see those kinds of speeds from it. Ours topped out at around 60-70mbps so there's not only limits on the PlayStation Network but also other hardware limitations. The PS5 on the other hand happily max's out our 140mbps connection via WiFi
