Weak single following "upgrade" to full fibre broadband

I’m just looking for advice. I had non -fibre BT Broadband for 18 months. As contract was at an end I decided to ‘upgrade’ to BT Full Fibre 150. When the contractor turned up to install the full fibre he advised that it would have to come in from the back of the flat. Because bending the fibre cable too much blocks the signal he wouldn’t be able to route it through my bedroom to my living room (where I spend most of my time using my laptop). It was also too “complicated” to drill a hole in my bedroom wall to take it straight through. He said the only option was to move my router through to back bedroom. He said not to worry if there was any problem because BT would give me Wi-Fi extenders. Anyway, the signal IS weak in my living room, around 20Mbps. I phoned BT but it transpires I have the wrong contract to entitle me to wifi extenders. The person I spoke to at BT did suggest that I upgraded to 300 Mbps for an extra £5 per month? Will this make any actual difference? They also said I could change my deal to get a wifi extender for an extra £10 per month but things are financially tight for me already. Also I have the EETV box in my living room and have noticed that picture frequently breaks up (it’s wifi tv. Don’t have aerial). I’m thinking my best option would be to just go back to Virgin. Any advice appreciated. Sorry for long post. Thank you.

If you're happy with a hole in the wall then just get an ethernet cable run from the ONT to where you want the router. An electrician can probably do it but you'd need to ask around locally. Obviously you could do it yourself with a pre-made cable but that will require a larger hole. Probably not economical to buy a decent RJ45 crimper but others may chip in with a cheaper DIY option.

There is nothing special about the cable that links the ONT to the router , so if the router isn’t in a great location for WiFi coverage, you could  buy another longer Ethernet cable and run that new cable from the ONT to a better location for the router and improve your WiFi connectivity , however if it’s a flat/apartment its not normally needed to have the router in the same room as where you woukd  normally be as the router coverage should be adequate , so it may be something else causing poor performance, like the router is using a congested WiFi channel….the other solutions are fine too ( WiFi extenders ) but more expensive.
