Ex Openreach employees accreditation

Go to solution

Hi there. I’m an ex Openreach employee. I’m trying for weeks now to get some proofs of my accreditation and skills gained in Openreach for my  new employer. After sending several emails to hrservices.references@bt.com

asking about my accreditation I’m don’t getting any responses. I’m feeling washed down by my old company, i can’t start my new job without  proving my accreditations. I don’t understand why company like BT treat ex employees this way, Can somebody help me please???

This is a customer to customer forum for BT consumer. As you know Openreach is a separate company.

Any ‘external’ qualification, like street works accreditation, ran by an external body , you would be registered with that body ( unless the accreditation has expired ) ,something like a BTEC which is also an external body , you would have received a certificate ( non expiring) from them.
AFAIK, all internal courses , accreditation etc. , are purely Openreach documentation  , OR do not provide or set industry qualifications , so if a competitor company is offering employment it seems odd that they would need ‘proof’ in the way of internal Openreach documentation, showing the Openreach courses etc you completed.

If you were a ‘ fibre jointer’ for example, although the basics would be similar, a new employer is unlikely to simply copy the exact way Openreach do things , so why you would need to prove conclusively that you know the Openreach way of operating, TBH , this sort of thing is what an interview is for ,where they can ask what experience you have , what type of equipment you are familiar with etc., plus I would have thought any offer of employment is conditional ( a probationary period ) so you can demonstrate that you know how do to do the job they employed you for, ( or they can simply revoke the job offer )

Do  they intend to offer any training or a period whilst you acclimatise to their way of working ? , if they are a company that use OR PIA ( physical infrastructure access ) and have to install their kit to an agreed standard inside or on Openreach assets, then they will be accrediting you , not transferring any OR qualifications, although you should be able to ‘show’ you know these standards if you did similar work for Openreach.

The standard reference OR ( or BT ) provide ( AFAIK ) simply states someone was employed between two dates ( start date and finish date ) nothing else, even if someone was ‘sacked’ rather than resigning is not mentioned, it doesn’t strike me as odd that asking retrospectively asking Openreach for internal documentation regarding your work history hasn’t got the response you want, it’s entirely possible that when you leave , under data retention rules, they delete any information they hold on you .

Unless you were dismissed or your employment ceased ‘under a cloud’ , in the first instance wouldn’t you approach an old colleague or your old boss directly , and ask them if there is an official way of obtaining your work history records, if it’s an appropriate thing to ask for, plus given that it sounds as though this new company target ‘ ex’ Openreach employees to save the expense of actually training anyone , and it’s unlikely you are the first ‘ex’ OR employee they have taken on, presumably these people would be asked if they know you , and were you   ‘OK’ at the job.

Within my own non-telecoms utility field all competent staff are issued with a competency certificates which list what skills and qualifications you hold within the company. I know with people leave to join 3rd party companies these along with a trade test are sufficient to maintain these recognised skills within the wider industry.

I always assumed OR/Telecoms might be similar.

I know that you don't want advice but there really is nothing that this forum can do to assist you other than offer advice such as emailing the HR director Kevin Brady.  Email addresses are not allowed to be posted on this forum but I presume the rest of his email address will be the normal Openreach email prefix.
