New 1.8gb speeds

Go to solution

Good Morning,

Hopefully someone can answer this as BT can't, openrech can't and my isp can't.

So, on openreach checker it says I can have the new speeds upto 1.8gb, so I ordered from my isp who then got back to say that my exchange can only supply 1gb. On bt wholesale the checker says max speed 1000mb.

I can't understand why openreach says one speed and bt wholesale say another. Can anyone explain this as my isp hasn't a clue.

Thanks in advance.

Someone is likely to point you towards the forums of your ISP because this is a community for BT customers...but...

BT Retail for residential customers does not offer the 1.6Gbps package (but they could), you can go to EE and order it, both use BT Wholesale. My Wholesale checker for my address says up to 1000Mbps but I can indeed order the 1.6Gbps service from EE. Openreach says 1800Mbps is available, I assume the package you ordered was the 1.6Gbps though? I am not aware of a 1.8Gbps package.

In cases where people want to order 1.6Gbps I'm not 100% if the result on BT Wholesale will reflect this anyway, always saying 1000Mbps.

Who's the ISP?

I get 900mb, however Zen have told me that when they took my order it wasn't until they checked from their side that they couldn't offer the uograde. I got this from Zen

Pretty sure BT Wholesale do have 1.6Gbps packages because EE deliver it.....who are backed by BT Wholesale, but not all areas will have it.

Out of curiosity does EE say you have have it? EE Broadband Deals For October 2024 | Home Broadband | EE

What Openreach's availability checker says does not directly relate to what the wholesale provider can provide, for example when FTTP work was first completed in my area BT Wholesale backed ISP's were some 5 months behind TalkTalk, Sky, Vodafone etc who could provide. Eventually BT Wholesale had is there on their checker so I could go with BT.

Hi

Yes ee says i can have it. Zen also have it though. I pre registered for the faster speeds which Zen started at the end of September.

Sorry I misunderstood, I thought you meant Zen didnt show the higher speed packages on the front page there...hence was curious what EE showed.

The news in June was:

The 5.5 million property footprint is a lot smaller than the Openreach full-fibre footprint and we believe this is likely down to Zen Internet offering the 1.2 and 1.8 Gbps products on exchanges where it has its own backhaul network, i.e. Zen Internet is buying direct from Openreach, rather than via the BT Wholesale platform, this reduces backhaul costs and makes the costs of offering multi Gigabit packages more predictable.

So Zen used to be purely BT Wholesale and I imagine alot of it still is but they have also built out their own backhaul which means in some areas they dont need to use BT Wholesale. It will be in those areas that have the higher speed, so in a way the BT Wholesale checker is irrelevant for Zen customers who want 1.8Gbps and the backhaul infra is Zen's own.

Seems like Zen are incorrectly presenting your postcode with those packages considering they are still relying on BT Wholesale (it would seem) in your exchange. Strangely you might be able to get 1.6Gbps from EE because it looks like Zen only offer the 1Gbps+ packages on their own gear. If you are really desperate for 1+ Gbps then maybe try EE, pretty sure thats the only BT Wholesale backed ISP who can offer 1.6Gbps.

At least that is what I have deduced here.
