Early reports on Google told me the same but advertised on Amazon as suitable for Gfast?

I didn't look at 'Google reports', I looked at the specification on the Asus website.

As @licquorice  says, the specification on the Asus website is what counts.

G.Fast ITU-T spec is G.9700 and G.9701 as you can see in the specs below they are not listed.

Ah - the technical fine print got me - seems odd they would release a WiFi6 version now, but doesn't work on BT G.fast? Do you know if firmware updates can solve this, or do I need to send back to Amazon? If a non-starter that seems like an own-goal such that it cannot combine with other Asus AIMesh devices and then need a non-Asus modem/router?

@Batch182

As has been mentioned in another recent post the market for G.Fast devices is quite small and will not be increasing so not much in it for the device manufacturers.

I think there are only 2 modem/routers suitable - the Asus DSL-AC88U and a very recent TP-Link one - and that's it.
