I’m with virgin media. But on the box it says BT works with all wifi routers.
I believe Virgin routers use the 192.168.0.xxx subnet and if the extender has a fixed IP of 192.168.1.1, you won't be able to access it directly. If it has a DHCP client, its IP address won't be 192.168.1.1 it will be in the Virgin range once connected to the Virgin router.
So should I visit a different website for this?

Yes but you need to know the IP address the device has picked up . Is there a list of devices in the Virgin hub, can you see the extender?
Alternatively, set a manual IP address of 192.168.1.2 for your Wifi network adapter on your laptop and connect to the extender using 192.168.1.1
Make sure you have turned off wifi on your laptop and are connecting to the extender directly with an Ethernet cable.

I suspect the OP means as opposed to 192.168.1.1
I presume the WPS method didn't work.
Try following "Method 2 - Without WPS button" in the manual 3907 Essentials Wi-Fi Extender 300 QSG Iss.3.pdf (bt.com) N.B. as stated in the procedure in the grey box, it is important to ensure that the PC, mac or whatever you're using is not connected by any method to your router
EDIT.
If you're using a virgin router then you cannot use the address 192.168.1.1, try 192.168.0.254 instead
