Well, whatever it was, BT have magically fixed it from afar, and we now have working phones 😃. No explanation as to what it was, or whether it's likely to happen again . But if it does, I will report it immediately rather than consider it might be a fault with the handsets and waste so much time 😁

It was most likely faulty equipment in the exchange, its all getting old and worn out, hence the move to BT Digital Voice.
I have the same problem and have reached the same stage where an Engineer should be coming out on Monday. The Master Socket into the house is like number 6 in the previous diagram.
I first had this issue over a week ago and it rectified itself overnight but returned last Monday BT say there are no issues in the area.
