Re: Broadband Dropping Out Approx Every 24hrs

Thanks @kamen , I’ve little to report other than BT have confirmed it does indeed drop daily at about the same time. I’m still awaiting further info following the 5 day analysis they needed to do. Will update more when I hear.

Re: Broadband Dropping Out Approx Every 24hrs

@pscraven , what did they do to confirm that, so I can ask them to do the same?

Re: Broadband Dropping Out Approx Every 24hrs

There are several ways. Every ISP monitors every customers line including what site you have connected to and what time, and what your IP adderss was.(unless you use a VPN)

Even easier they just access your hub and check the log files.

So yes you can ask them to moniter your line as they already do it is just a matter of permissions being granted for an employee to be able to access it.

Re: Broadband Dropping Out Approx Every 24hrs

Thanks for this, I can’t understand why BT/Openreach don’t follow this route of investigation. Baffles me!

I have done a little more research and I think @mar10 , you may be right… I have a suspicion that post reconnection, I am now on a Single Order Generic Ethernet Access (SoGEA) connection, which is broadband only (no phone), and this may well be affected by REIN at the box/switch.

I have asked BT/Openreach to switch me back to copper and see if this resolves the issue (albeit for the time being only as I also suspect all broadband only connections will go this way eventually).

@kamen , might be worth you asking this question as well?

@pscraven , thanks. I'll talk to the engineer that will come on Friday about this.

You are still on copper, no idea what you mean by switch back to copper.

If you have SOGEA there is no E side copper connected to induce the REIN, only D side.

Re: Broadband Dropping Out Approx Every 24hrs

@licquorice , my  poor terminology and limited knowledge are a dangerous thing!

I think you saying the Exchange (E) side connection is Ethernet and the Distribution (D) side is copper pair?

As I understand it, a SoGEA connection allows Broadband to be delivered without a traditional PSTN line, which is part of BTs move to digital voice?

What I was trying to get at rather clumsily is that I’ve asked BT (in turn Openreach) to switch my connection back to however I was connected prior to Jan 6 when it didn’t drop daily, as I suspect however this was delivered wasn’t affected by REIN, whereas it now is.

I asked this question of them previously and I was told my physical connection hadn’t changed. The information I was provided yesterday suggests that wasn’t true.

Hopefully this makes more sense. Thanks

Re: Broadband Dropping Out Approx Every 24hrs

Your physical connection hasn't changed.

@Broadband is delivered via fibre to the cabinet and then via copper to your house. Telephony is delivered via copper (E side) to the cabinet and copper (D side) to your house. If you have no telephony, there is no E side, however, it is possible the redundant E side has been left in situ and may be causing the problem as@@mar10 has suggested.

Ethernet isn't a physical medium, it is a protocol. However, colloquial use of the term Ethernet cables tends to confuse things.

Re: Broadband Dropping Out Approx Every 24hrs

The filters in the remote DSLAM should reject any noise from the E-Side, which is outside of the normal voice band, so it should not appear on the D-Side.

Those filters perform the same function as those in the exchange on an ADSL connection.

What is more likely is that there is a high resistance connection, which without any 50V coming from the exchange, is affecting the performance of the line. (Lack of DC Wetting).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wetting_current

This is likely to become an issue with other customers on SOGEA.

Thank you! This makes a lot of sense.
