Re: Can VDSL be 'removed' from a line?

Remote as in Scottish Islands, but not so remote that I am a sole house, there are others in the vicinity.

I've been trying to figure out how the line gets into the property this last week - It has to be underground as there are no visible overhead lines connected to the property that I can see. There is one rather thick cable that I think may be it, coming in, though it goes behind walls its hard to trace, but looks like that goes to the master socket ultimately.

I've not had a chance to speak with many of my neighbors yet, but I can certainly ask around when I do to see what speeds they are getting.

My address info is definitely non standard. The property itself is listed twice on most websites under different variations of the address including the DSLChecker. In total though, I have seen many more different combinations of spelling and ways of formatting the address. I have just checked the royal mail website and they have one version which I would consider to be the most commonly used.

That said - The last full image I posted was using the Royal Mail listed address, though using the variation that the DSL checker has stored, that gives the same result.

Finally, yes, I did crop the top of the image to hide phone number (which also excluded exchange and cabinet). I assume exchange and cabinet are not too personal though, so can share them if its permitted here and would help?

Re: Can VDSL be 'removed' from a line?

exchange and cab information is not personal and can be posted but will basically just show if your cab is fibre enable which from dslchecker results we know it is

the results suggest you are a long way from the cabinet but the actual speed you get of 7mb suggests otherwise.  it does show you are on adslmax and the faster adsl2 is available to you

Re: Can VDSL be 'removed' from a line?

Thank you. I just pulled some stats from the router too - Not sure if this helps to indicate distance or line suitability for ADSL2:

Data rate:448 Kbps / 7.2 Mbps

Maximum data rate:1.280 Mbps / 7.476 Mbps

Full Fibre (FTTP) Mode:On

Noise margin:25.0 / 4.4

Line attenuation:28.0 / 46.5

Signal attenuation:0.0 / 46.5

VPI/VCI:0/38

Modulation:G.992.1(DMT)

Latency type:Interleaved

I haven't changed any of these settings from when I got the route, but no idea why FTTP is on

Re: Can VDSL be 'removed' from a line?

I'm wondering if the property is fed via an infill cabinet which would explain the observed 45M speed in 2020 but the checker results are being based on still being connected to the original cabinet at a much greater distance.

Exchange and cabinet info from the checker might help shed some light.

That setting just converts LAN port 4 to a WAN port to connect to an FTTP ONT, you can turn it off to revert it to a LAN port.

Re: Can VDSL be 'removed' from a line?

Thank you - Duly noted on the FTTP. Exchange and cabinet are:

...on Exchange VOE is served by Cabinet 1

Not sure how reliable the telecom-tariffs site is, but their data seems to indicate that that cabinet has been FTTC capable since 2016! Taking that with a grain of salt though as not sure they are affiliated with BT in any way.

Re: Can VDSL be 'removed' from a line?

Is this island sufficiently remote ( small ) that the OR engineer needs to jump on a ferry to visit ?, years ago some islands were fed in a pretty non standard way ( microwave links /LA30) and presumably were given access to FTTC in possibly a similarly non standard way, and my understanding was in the past , the engineer visiting such locations such was effectively the oracle, and knew every part of the local network and would be capable of sorting out any anomalies, perhaps that isn’t the case anymore.

Chances are there is only 1 cabinet and it’s fair to assume it is FTTC enabled but the address inconsistencies are stopping the allocation of a port in the fibre cabinet and unfortunately that is why you cannot order …it probably needs all the incorrect records deleting, and the one accurate address manipulated to show FTTC availability ( which presumably it once physically had ) …

It probably needs suitably knowledgeable OR tech with the access to sort out these records, but given the way Ofcom requires BT and OR to interact, it’s not just a case of BT picking up the phone and calling OR

Re: Can VDSL be 'removed' from a line?

@iniltous no 🙂 It's a ferry from Scotland, but I am on the mainland, not one of the many smaller surrounding islands - There certainly seem to be engineers based here, not sure how many though - I'm sure they are going flat out!

Well that's blown my theory, there is only 1 cabinet served by Voe exchange, no infill cabinets.
