Re: Convert BT line to ethernet for fttp install?

Go to solution

This is where you confuse me again, ‘the optical cable can be connected to ONT from the landing if long enough’ ?, if the optical cable from the CSP isn’t long enough to ‘reach’ to the location of the ONT in the loft or anywhere else , then clearly the service can’t work , so by default the cable is going to be long enough, it’s really if you expect it to be left longer  than necessary to give you the option to move the cable (and ONT ) into the loft that’s at issue , so if my scenario of the optical cable with a few metres of ‘slack’ entering the loft with the engineer remaining outside the loft , and its you fitting running the last few meters in the loft and fitting/connecting the ONT in there isn’t exactly what you envisage ( it’s assumed you want  the ONT in the loft so you can easily connect to your reengineered sockets as an Ethernet extension) what do you mean by this  ?

For goodness sake. You're well overthinking it. Let it go 😁.

Please don't reply asking for anymore info, I can't think of anymore info I can give you.

"if the optical cable isn’t long enough to ‘reach’ to the location of the ONT then clearly the service can’t work"  Yes, I am aware.

I'll try one more, final time. Maybe I'm missing something, or not explaining it properly, but here goes.

If the tech won't go into the loft (which he probably won't).....If the optical cable is long enough (~2m), it can be reached from the landing, under the loft hatch. After connecting that to  ONT, then I can lift up the ONT into the loft to plug into mains, and the new ethernet box from a stepladder.

I fully understand you're trying to help, but you're thinking about this far more than I am now. I'll just "wait & see"

Either tech will say yes, or no, It either works, or it doesn't 🙃

I'll find out on 27th.

Thank you again.

The ONT is the property of Openreach and the technician will expect to fit it, connect the optical cable himself, power it up and check that it's working.
It seems very unlikely that he'll accept having the ONT "floating" on a long length of optical cable - the standard installation is to have the ONT fixed to a wall close to where optical cable comes through from the outside box.
However, I wish you luck in persuading the technician to adopt your plan!

Just to keep forum updated......

I've had a rethink, I was looking today for the best route if loft wasn't happening, and as it happens, the current BT line comes into the house adjacent to a gutter downpipe.

Assuming new line will take a similar route, I now intend removing downpipe on morning of install, and hope this will be OK for the line to be bought down to floor level. This means it will be out of site.

Thank you 🙂

Just as feedback should anyone else be thinking of using the loft as I wanted....

I said to the engineers what I was hoping for when they arrived, and as expected, they said they don't go in lofts.

Then I explained that they wouldn't have to, and to please just pop upstairs to see what I meant, and after seeing the proposed set-up, they said sure - no problem.

So here I am now connected to fibre through my loft without any cable coming down outside of wall.

I didn't need my back-up plan after all.

Thanks to all again for your input 🙂👍
