Download speed

Go to solution

Hey there! I'm new to BT and just wanted to ask if I could ever upgrade my download speed from 28mbps to something higher in the future? Or am I capped at 28mbps until my contract ends and then can upgrade the speed? The connection itself is fantastic and the upload speed isn't a problem, It's just the download speed is a bit slow since I download games all the time on my xbox and my computer.

Re: Download speed

BT do not cap broadband at 28mbps. If it were capped it would be at the maximum speed your package is sold at ie 55Mbps or what ever other package you pay for.

However, just because you pay for a higher speed package it does not mean that your line is able to deliver that speed, the exception being if you have a full fibre package.

If you run this checker an post the results it will show what your line can deliver.

 BT Broadband (btwholesale.com)

If you do not have a phone or have a digital voice phone use the address checker.

The other possibility is that there is a fault with your line.

Can you log onto your BT hub using this link

Home (bthomehub.home) and go to the Advance settings and Technical Log and post the "Information" page.

Re: Download speed

Looks like your line can only support 40 Meg, however your hub only showing the connection for one day. Have you rebooted the hub? If you keep rebooting the hub trying do increase the speed the DLM sees this as a fault and slows the line. Do you know how far you are from the Green street cabinet.

I'm like 7-8 houses from the green street cabinet, also the Hub is always left on, sometimes it will cut off then turn back on on its own.

It could be a line fault. If you’re that close to the cabinet you should be getting full speeds. You could always ask one of the moderators to look into your line and find out what speeds you should be getting. I found that the wholesale site monitors your line at certain times and shows the average speeds that’s been seen on your line. You could also find out what your neighbours speeds are. My thoughts are the line isn’t t performing too well.

Re: Download speed

According to your hub's stats you would appear to be getting about 30Mbps with the max data rate being about 36Mbps which is within the range that the wholesale checker indicates you should be getting albeit it is at the lower end.

While you have said that you are only a short distance from the cabinet, not all lines go by the most direct route to the property. Your line attenuation indicates the line is about 1.5km from the cabinet to your property. Your noise margin is 6 which is what it should be give or take. If there was a fault and DLM was reducing your line speed the reading would not be 6.

As regards your neighbours speeds, that has no bearing on your speeds as all line are unique and can not be compared with each other.

You could try reporting a fault to BT but if your speed is within your stay fast guaranteed speed which you should have been given when you signed up,  I doubt that BT will do anything to try and improve it.

Re: Download speed

I would also turn the FTTP tab to off in stats and get use of the hub ethernet connection 4 as you are on FTTC
