FTTP in house with multiple flats

Hi BT Community,

We recently have gotten the news that FTTP has become available in our street, which is something we are very interested in. We live in a house made up of 5 flats and we were wondering if for the installation each individual flat needs to have a separate cable/modem installed or if we can have a central installation and share this between the flats ( have multiple connections from a central modem)?

Obviously we would like to be economical here as well as minimize disruption and avoiding 5 different installations/cables. We currently have only copper phone wires running through the shared entrance.

Re: FTTP in house with multiple flats

Each house will have a separate cable, ONT (optical modem) and router.

Re: FTTP in house with multiple flats

If you wanted to use one connection for all flats , then obviously one person would have to get it installed and then be responsible for all the internet activity on the connection , and pay the bill ( presumably collecting a fee off the others ) and it would be upto yourselves ( not Openreach or BT ) to provide the wiring from the router within one flat to all the other flats , in other words it’s not really practical.
There are some student flat type situations where the landlord may get a single connection and effectively include internet access as part of the rental agreement , but the connection would be in the name of the landlords business and likely would use a proper networking equipment

That depends how the property is made up, each property can have 1 ONT but if the address is properly setup as an MDU (multi dwelling unit) then each flat can have an ONT, if it's a house being let out to 5 people like shared accommodation then it would be 1 connection only.
