GPON Router

Go to solution

I have an older Huawei 1-port ONT (the one with battery backup).  I'd rather not have Huawei kit as part of my network.

I saw that AVM produce a WiFi 6 router with built in GPON, the FRITZ!Box 5590 Fiber.  I presume it wouldn't be possible to use this directly on the Openreach network?  I recall reading something about OR using shared fibre and so the ONT has to have an encryption key for communication with the exchange head end, which wouldn't be configured in a product like the 5590 Fiber.

I thought I would double check that it isn't possible.

Thanks.

You will need to use Openreach supplied ONT in order for it to communicate with Openreach's headends OLT.

Re: GPON Router

Not necessarily. But you will need a GPON router that supports GPON Serial Number change as Openreach uses SN for OLT authentication. The SN is the sticker on the Openreach ONT. Not sure if they use other layers like PLOAM or LOID for authentication.

Also, make sure the fibre port of the router is SC/APC. The FRITZ!Box 5590 Fiber router uses a LC/APC Duplex connector.
