Internal and external cables - difference?

Hi all,

Where a fibre cable needs to be run on an outside wall out from the CSP box to an entry point elsewhere on the property (i.e. where it is undesirable to run cable directly from the CSP box into the property), presumably the cable used to run from the CSP to the preferred entry point is an external grade spec. When this cable enters the property, is there a further connection to attach an internal cable which then runs to the ONT? If so, how is this connection made? Or does the external cable run to the ONT?

Re: Internal and external cables - difference?

Depends on the network, OR for example have an ‘inside out’ cable where from the ONT location the cable is run to the point of egress , the outer jacket is removed to this point , once outside the property the outer jacket of the cable remains to give extra protection to physical damage and UV light so it’s the same continuous cable just with a removable outer jacket removed for the internal part of the cable run .

Re: Internal and external cables - difference?

Thanks for the prompt reply and clear explanation. Yes, I am a BT broadband customer so my install will be Openreach.

Having said that, I know from reading this forum that sub-contractors are used for installs too. Do you know if it is more likely to be a sub-contractor than Openreach who will be assigned my install? Just wondered if maybe Openreach focus primarily on the high level network stuff.

@iniltous they should all be working to the same standards set by OR...

OR did the external work on our Sky Fibre installation and he was extremely helpful and polite.

Re: Internal and external cables - difference?

Chances are it’ll be a Contractor. Openreach do have FTTP SD Teams but they’re primarily used for Sky BTTW Tasks, that’s Build to the Wall, Civils Avoidance and Repair Tasks.

The majority of Installs are done by Contractors, be it Quinns, Kelly’s, Morrisons, Pickr and god knows who else they’re using now.

As said they should work to the same Standard as Openreach but from the quality I’ve seen recently from Openreach DL I wouldn’t hold your breath.

Thanks 36ULW.

Where you say “Openreach DL”, what does the DL stand for?

Direct labour, so directly employed by OR not contractors
