New Fibre

We've just had fibre put into our house.  We've had problems every since. The signal drops regularly and the speeds vary wildly.  The installer placed the ONT box and router in the far corner of the front room.  We do not regularly use this room.  The old router was upstairs in a fairly central location. The installer asked if the location was ok and I said yes as long as the signal would reach the whole house, he said it would, so went ahead with install.  We've had problems from the day it was installed.  We've had an engineer round to look who suggests we ask for the ONT to be moved.  Would this solve the issue of wildly varying speeds and frequent drop out of signal.  Is there a simpler solution? Thanks

There are 3 possible solutions.

1. Get Openreach via BT to move the ONT and hub to a more suitable location. This may or or may not be possible.

2. Leave the ONT where it is and run an Ethernet cable to where you want the hub. You either do that yourself or get a local tradesman to do it.

3. Use power line adapters to connect the ONT to a re-sited hub. This may reduce your speed if you have the 900M package.

Thanks for suggestions.  We have Full Fibre 100 with speeds up to 150.  Is it normal that one minute we can get 150 and the next it won't connect?

In that case I suggest that using power line adapters to connect the ONT to a relocated hub should be fine. You can place the hub where it was previously to give better coverage.

Do you get the same wide speed variations if you connect your computer to the router via ethernet cable?
If you do, you have an issue with the fibre connection or with the ONT
If you don't, then it's your internal WiFi that is the problem

Thanks, we had powerline adapters for the old router we had no problem with these. They were removed when the new fibre was installed. The new router is plugged into the ONT ( downstairs front corner off house). I'll try moving the router with adapters.   

Not wanting to confuse the issue but we also had a sky booster from sky as our TV kept losing the WiFi, this solved the problem and was plugged into the old router (which was upstairs).   The engineer has moved this sky booster and plugged it into my pc (upstairs) and said it would improve the signal, it hasn't.  So now my pc is connected via ethernet whereas previously I used a WiFi dongle and never had any issues. Speed on pc is measuring 2.4 this morning and last night it was 40.

My pc had never  been connected via ethernet I've used a dongle which has worked fine previously.   When fitting the new fibre the sky booster we had (provided by sky due to TV issues and worked fine) had been moved and fitted to my pc.  I was told this would improve signal upstairs; it hasn't. I could try attaching a laptop, problem is router is in an awkward place in a room we don't use.   Signal is generally strong next to the router but drops liked a stone as you walk away. Ps we don't live in a huge house.

Speeds over WiFi are subject to multiple environmental factors so are not guaranteed by your provider, or Openreach , many modern houses have foil backed plasterboard/ drywall , which can make WiFi very poor inside those houses , so siting the router in a dead spot can make WiFi very flaky in other rooms  ….but ultimately this is your problem, to determine if you have a problem that the ISP or Openreach are responsible for , you need to be using a wired device not WiFi

….if you have a poor WiFi issue there are several ways it can be addressed, but your provider and Openreach are not responsible for WiFi from the router  being poor in your other rooms in home

Thanks for the reply. I understand what you are saying. Just annoyed that the engineer completely reassured me that it would work fine in that location and it would reach the whole house. House is 100 years old so no modern insulation.  I finish it odd though today I can get 150mbps on laptop and phones, then get no signal or very low from same location. But this must be normal?
