New WiFi Installation

Hi, I was just wondering if anyone had the new full fibre 900 Halo3+ installed and could let me know some things. It says that they would need to install a new box next to the existing phone ports. Would this new box be hooked up to the existing wires or would it require its own wires being fed through the house?

Re: New WiFi Installation

As the name suggests, full fibre requires a fibre optic cable to be connected to your house. This will terminate on an ONT (optical modem) which then connects to your router. Your existing phone connection is not used. Your telephony service (if you wish to keep it)  will also probably be converted to Digital Voice (VoIP) which uses DECT (cordless) technology to connect to the router.

Re: New WiFi Installation

Sorry I'm a little technically ignorant when it comes to all those terms. So the new box installed will require a wire connected to it or is it wireless? Why i ask is that it is not on the front of the house and requires a cable being fed under the floor in order to reach it. Thanks for the reply.

Re: New WiFi Installation

The new 'box' converts the optical signal entering the house to an Ethernet signal and will require an Ethernet cable (not phone cable) to connect it to your router (Hub). The hub can be anywhere you like in the house up to 100 metres, but the installer will connect it to the ONT with a 1 metre patch cable.

Your existing wiring is entirely irrelevant.

@TobyTheCatJust to point out. You are not getting WiFi installed but FTTP which needs a Fibre Optic wired connection to bring you the service which you can then connect to the via the Hub wirelessly if you wish. Do not expect to get 900Mbs via a wireless (WiFi) connection.

Re: New WiFi Installation

OK last question. I have a bt box by the front door where the wire originates from that leads through the house to the box with the telephone port thingy in it. The box that they need to fit, would it be near the original box by the front door or the other box that is other side of the house? If it is the phone one on other side of the house, could that be fitted anywhere in the house or would it have to be near to that one? Thanks again for all the help.

As already stated, your existing phone wiring is totally irrelevant.

The ONT will be sited at a position that you and the engineer can agree upon. Your phone service will be provided by Digital Voice which is DECT (cordless) phone technology.

Re: New WiFi Installation

The vast majority of FTTP installations are from the same telegraph pole,  or if underground service , from the same side of the property as the existing copper pair service is delivered, so if you currently get your existing service from a telegraph pole then the new FTTP service will come from that too ( but via a new optical cable ) ,

Within reason the new service can be installed where you want it , but if you have service coming in at the front and want the new service at the back that may not be considered…..the cable from outside is terminated on a box on the external wall and another optical cable ( one designed for internal use ) is ran to the ONT location, the ONT location needs to be near a power outlet ( because it works off the mains ).

If you don’t want the router near the ONT , you can install or arrange a cable to be installed yourself that allows the router to be sited in a different area to the ONT , but when the service is first installed the router will have to be close enough to the ONT to be connected with a short Ethernet cable.

The  router obviously also needs power so it’s a double power socket that’s normally required for the ONT and router , although obviously if you used an power extension lead that would work, it just wouldn’t be very tidy.

Have a look at this Openreach video:

The indoor ONT, the box that converts light into electrical signals that routers such as the BT Smart Hub 2 can understand, will look something like this:
