It's a real process yes, BT will run line tests and if they think something is wrong they'll get in touch, the texts can easily be spoofed though, if you're concerned you can call up or just don't reveal any info.
Legit texts will simply book an engineer and track fault progress, from my last fault I just confirmed using 'Next', 'More' and 'Agent', no personal data was asked to be confirmed, It was a really simple process.
