Is this a spam call?

I received a call from an asian lady on 07748465793, she  said it was from the technical department as there was a problem with my internet. I was sent an email at time of call with a pin number, which she asked for. She told me to go online and do a speed test . Which was at BT wholesale site, I did run the speed test. She said my internet was being used by others. I did not follow this any further as I was suspicious.

Should I have given her the pin number?  The email was fro btcomms@info.bt.com. is this genuine? She did know my email address.

Re: Is this a spam call?

It was a scam call. BT will never cold call you to tell you that you have a problem with your Internet.

The PIN was sent to you because she activated the "forgotten password" system that sends a PIN from BT to you. She was able to do this because she knew your email address. Like most people who have an email address your email address will be all over the Internet so no need to worry that she knew it.

If you gave the scammer your PIN it would have allowed the scammer to access your BT account and email account.

If you did not give the PIN you should be OK but it might be best to check your email account for any forwarding email address and after doing that consider changing your password.

What do you mean about checking for any forwarding address?

Re: Is this a spam call?

If a scammer gains access to your email account they may set up a forwarding address so that a copy of all emails that you receive are sent to the scammers email address. This would allow them to receive emails that may assist them to access accounts such as your bank account without you being aware.

To check that there are no forwarding email addresses set up you need to log onto your email account, there may be a yellow banner informing you that forwarding or a rule has been set up.

To check you then need to click on the settings found by clicking on your username at the right hand side. Then go to "Mail" in the left hand column and click on "Auto Forwarding" to see if there are any email addresses there that you did not set up. You should also check in "Rules" to see if there are any rules that you did not set up.

If there are you need to delete them howver if you did not give the scammer the PIN that was sent to you it is unlikely that they have gained access to your account but it is worth checking just to be sure.
