Contract expires on 10th April, going to change supplier due to costs. If I ask the switch to happen on the 10th April, I assume I wont be charged any penalty ?
Correct, but even a few days before will be a minimal amount as it's charged pro-rata. You'll probably be charged a full month & then that will be corrected with a final bill.
