My mother is confused and in a care home and I need to cancel her landline

My mother is having to move in with family due to dementia and having lost father in June. When I rang BT they said they want £500 to close the account. The house is going up for sale next week. I can't afford to pay that currently and her pension is not much more than that a month. Can anyone please show us some human compassion at this difficult time please.
