How do I back them up? Can those hard disks be removed/ can i hook it up to my laptop

You are correct, you can not have TV without broadband but the contract does not get cancelled by OTS so you must cancel it other wise you will still be billed for it because the contract is still running even although you can not watch it.

So I rang them most they could knock off was £3. The chap was very nice but as a new customer I can get the same deal for £46.99 not £76.99 if I recontracted. He even said have been with them 9 years, no loyalty. Maybe theyll ring back ill give it a couple of days

Actually I don't think there is any way to back up recordings stored on any TV Box/PVR, short of physically removing the hard disk and mounting it to a desktop computer, and then copying from that.
The only other method is to play the recordings in real time and use another PVR to record them, but that is very time consuming.
