UNINSTALLING McAfee - impossible!

After receiving notice we had to uninstall Mcafee and replace with Norton - followed instructions - keeps saying we have Mcafee on the Mac - research all the different solutions given on this and other forums - still will not let me install Norton

what do i do now ?
